New Dawn..........

Sunrise over Andalucia, I took the picture above at dawn last October, whilst on an amazing yoga retreat.  It marked the start of our journey back to Gli Oli and ultimately, to ourselves.

We created Gli Oli as a home fragrance brand in 2014, back then we were bursting with enthusiasm, buzzing with ideas and with hindsight, full of naivety about how difficult it is to create, launch and sustain a new business on your own, with limited resources.

As a Neals Yard Remedies-trained professional aromatherapist, I only blended with therapeutic grade essential oils, using the principles of aromatherapy to create products that delivered on a therapeutic as well as an olfactory level.  Nothing was tested on animals, we only used soy wax, all our packaging was hand-made here in England and was of course, recyclable.

Our commitment to our values meant that even when we were deciding which kind of reeds to use in our diffusers, we decided to do it the hard way; instead of buying in the usual synthetic reeds, which went against our principles,  we chose to use natural rattan.  When we started, this involved buying our rattan in coils, soaking it in a bath and then cutting to length while it was still pliable.  Once cut and dried, we then hand-dyed the reeds to our signature purple colour with a vegetable based dye - our reeds really are a labour of love!

Five years on we’re still here, whilst that’s a source of satisfaction for me, I’d be lying if I said we had done anything more than barely tick over during those 5 years.and for much of that time we were so disillusioned and disheartened we barely thought about Gli Oli from one month to the next.

We knew that we had created amazing products, everyone who bought/smelt/experienced them gave us genuinely positive feedback; we were stocked by retailers and by carefully curated online stores as well as our own website, despite this sales were very hard to come by.

We’d poured our souls into the business, we had created Gli Oli from scratch.  I created all the fragrance blends, starting with pen and paper, long before we ever made a candle.  We even created the branding ourselves - our four petal logo is actually something that I have doodled since I was a child, I drew it freehand one day when John and I were brainstorming ideas, he loved it and it felt right, so our logo was born.

We created a brand, one that delivered, both in terms of product quality and appeal but which wasn’t translating into the sales we had hoped for.

We continued to sell a few products but, massively demotivated, we put little or no effort into the business.  I gave up blending and product testing, we were so disillusioned about the business  that we were almost embarrassed to discuss it or our products with anyone.  Gil Oli became a room in our house that we rarely ventured into, either mentally or physically.

Our journey to this point has been a difficult but ultimately life-affirming one.  We spent the intervening years finding a way back to “us”.  With a lot of help and a healthy dose of introspection, we have come to realise that far from creating a brand and hiding behind it, in order for it to succeed we have to stand in front of it, because the brand is us, we created it and we should be proud of it, not embarrassed by it.

We’re working hard, our enthusiasm is back, I have been blending new home fragrances to be launched soon, but more excitingly I have started to create skincare products - my real passion.

We have been testing these ourselves for a few months and finally we have taken the plunge and given the first products to a select group of clients/customers to test and report back.  Initial feedback has been really positive and we can’t wait to tell you more about it.

This long journey back to ourselves/our brand has taught me one thing above all others - be true to yourselves - your values, your vision, your brand and your products.  Never be embarrassed by what you have created, celebrate it and yourself, don’t hide behind it.

Comparison with others is pointless - both personally and professionally - don’t over-analyse others’ success, no matter how unfathomable you find it, concentrate on you and what you are doing; just be yourself, but most importantly, be the best “you” you can be.

New Season ...

The arrival of Spring is a great time for both reflection and for new ideas.  So it’s a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on our first six months as a brand, what we have learned and to look forward to the coming months and the next stage in our journey.

When we launched last July, we loved what we had created and were hopeful that others would too.  It’s always nerve-wracking to put your heart and soul into something that you believe passionately in, then have to cross your fingers and hope that you’ve got it right.  Six months on, it’s been a roller-coaster, a huge learning-curve and happily, a confirmation that people love what we do.  Phew!

We have had some really positive media coverage - have a look at our new Reviews section of the website to check out what people are saying about us.  We now have a growing number of stockists; getting our first retail stockist last August, a month after we launched was incredibly exciting for us; it was such a buzz and we were hugely flattered that a retailer liked our products and our ethos so much that they decided to stock our whole range there and then.

Swapping the corporate world for the chance to create our own brand and products has taken us outside of our comfort zone; six months on, we have met some really amazing and inspirational people; learnt some great lessons - about business and about life; and reinforced our determination to continue to grow and expand Gli Oli.

That expansion begins with new fragrance blends for Spring/Summer.  We are currently blending and fine-tuning new fragrances to add to the portfolio in the next few months.  We believe that the best fragrances for your home are those created exclusively using pure essential oils.  Our home and office is currently filled with the aromas of Spring and Summer - rose, lavender, geranium, orange blossom, jasmine as we experiment with creating those perfect new blends.  As soon as we are happy that the new blends are amazing, we will let you in on the secret!

Now, we’d better get back to those blends…

New Beginnings

I wonder how many "big" ideas start on a beach?.  The seeds that Gli Oli has grown from were sown here - on Koekohe Beach in New Zealand, staring in wonder at the Moeraki Boulders.

We had sold our house, sold our car, given up our jobs and embarked on a world trip.  We weren't gap year students, searching for that big adventure before university; we were sensible, happily-married, mortgage-paying, mid-thirties.

The trip opened our eyes to many things, amongst them the power and possibilities offered by alternative therapies and I quickly became fascinated by aromatherapy and the therapeutic properties of essential oils.  By the time we returned home nine months later, I had decided to train in aromatherapy and follow my passion.

Back home, reality set in, we needed to live, so returned to work full-time, whilst I studied for my professional diploma in aromatherapy at weekends and in the evenings.

I'd be lying if I said our journey to this point was a short one, it has taken us 12 years since we took that picture of the Moeraki Boulders to get here and there have been a few bumps on the road, but we have arrived finally, at the beginning of the Gli Oli story.

We have strived to create a brand that is luxurious without compromising on our core value - to deliver quality products, using only 100% pure essential oils and natural soy waxes and soya-derived base products, free from chemicals, additives or synthetic fragrances.

We have enjoyed the ride so far and invite you to join us on the next stage of our journey.
